Obituary for Betty Jane Gooch Spratlin
Ms. Betty Jane Gooch Spratlin, 80, of Greenville Mississippi, passed away on Saturday May 29, 2021 at her home.
Visitation will be held on Thursday June 3, 2021 from 12 to 2pm at Parker Memorial Funeral Home, Bruce, MS with the funeral to follow at 2 pm with Brother Jeff Harmon officiating.
Ms. Spratlin was born in Silver Creek, Mississippi to Howard Bryant Gooch Sr. and Jannie Elizabeth Herrington Gooch on April 4, 1941. She attended school at Prentiss and Grenada and then graduated from Bruce High School. She married William Alfred Spratlin on August 14, 1959.
During her life she worked at Kellwood Garment Factory, Hillcrest Hospital in Calhoun City, and retired from Gilbert Home Health Agency in Bruce, Mississippi.
Betty started playing the piano around the age of 8 years old. She later entered a gifted program at Ole Miss during middle school and high school. Betty was part of a gospel group during the 1970’s called the Rebelaires. She traveled all over singing at churches and singings. In the 1980’s she joined a group called The Good News Trio. The Good News Trio recorded two albums. Betty made several appearances on the “The Mornin’ Show with Buddy & Kay Bain”. Betty was the pianist at New Liberty Baptist Church (Vardaman, MS) then at Mount Comfort Baptist Church (Bruce, MS). She later moved to Cedar Hill Tennessee. She was also the pianist at Cedar Hill Methodist Church until moving to Greenville, MS in 2020. Betty was a true Ole Miss Rebel fan.
Betty Spratlin is preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Janie Gooch, her daughter Debbie Jane Spratlin Williams, and a brother Howard B. Gooch Jr. She was also preceded by her sidekick, Bandit.
Betty Jane is survived by her sons, Ricky Fred (Gina) Spratlin of Greenville Mississippi and Toney Lynn (Angela) Spratlin of Westmoreland, Tennessee, son-in-law Gary Williams of Cedar Hill, Tennessee. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren Britney Elizabeth Williams of Vancouver, Canada, Kayla Bree (Brandon) Hodge of Memphis, Tennessee, Laura Beth (Steve) Iversen of Wahiawa, Hawaii, Kyle Alexander Williams of Cedar Hill, Tennessee, Seth Elliott Spratlin of Greenville, MS, LilyAnne Elizabeth Spratlin and Timothy Nathaniel Spratlin of Westmoreland, TN. Betty also leaves on great-granddaughter Nora Rae Iversen.
