Douglas (Doug) Glenn Smith, beloved brother, uncle, son, and friend, left this earthly plane on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the age of 56, with family at his side.
Doug was born on July 27, 1967 at Hickam Air Force Base, in Honolulu, Hawaii, to his parents, Frederick Rowland Smith and Gayle McCormick Smith.
Doug attended several schools before graduating from Bruce High School in 1985. After high school graduation, Doug joined the US Navy, where he worked as a Radioman. His experiences in the Navy cemented his love of the sea and sea life. After leaving the Navy in 1999, Doug attended Delta State University, receiving his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2003. After graduating from Delta State, Douglas began his career as a Longline & Bottom fish Fisheries Observer at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Honolulu, Hawaii. As a Fisheries Observer, Doug lived onboard a fishing vessel collecting data and monitoring interactions with marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds, and other protected resources, until his retirement in 2019. He was very passionate about his career and marine conservation and made significant contributions to the field.
Doug's warm and generous spirit was often accompanied by his silly sense of humor, which never failed to make everyone laugh. He was a thoughtful individual, never missing a birthday, graduation, or important milestone. His love for sports memorabilia, fishing, comedies, Tennessee Titans football, James Bond, pretty ladies, dogs, history, and classic rock music was a reflection of his diverse interests and his ability to find joy in many aspects of life.
Douglas was preceded in death by his parents, Rowland and Gayle, and his grandparents, Loyd Sr. and Ola Williams Smith, and Buford Shaw "Boots" and Mildred Irene Simpson McCormick. He is survived by brothers Randy Smith (Stacy) of Banner, Mississippi, and Brent Smith (Leah) of North Pole, Alaska, stepbrother Shawn Shepherd of Bruce, Mississippi, stepsister Misty Goodson (Shane) of Bruce, Mississippi, stepmother June Box Smith of Bruce, Mississippi, and a host cherished nieces and nephews, and other family members and friends. Doug will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
In honor of Doug’s memory, the family kindly requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This cause was close to Doug's heart, and your contributions will help to continue his legacy of compassion and care for children.
Rest in peace, Doug. Your kind and loving spirit will live on forever in our hearts.
