Hazel Capwell Russell, 91, of Pittsboro departed from this life on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, at Bruce Community Living Center. Exactly 8 years prior on the same date of her passing, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, William Bryant Russell. She was welcomed into this world by her late parents, Glen Dorsey Capwell and Alice Vena Capwell on the Spring day of March 12th, 1931, in a small share croppers house in the Old Town Community of Calhoun County.
Hazel spent many decades married to her loving husband William Bryant (Bill) Russell. The love that existed between this couple could be measured by not only the length of their marriage but also by the memories made traveling through the mountain tops and of the valleys of life. She was a former owner and business partner with her husband of the Western Auto Store in Bruce for 50 plus years. While this marriage produced lasting memories, it also gave life to four children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Aside from showering her family with love and spoiling her children and grandchildren alike, Hazel possessed the complementary skill of playing the piano in her younger years. She had a God given talent with an artist brush like no other. She found joy in using her God given talent to paint beautiful paintings that she gave to family and friends and hang in many homes and businesses today. Aside from her love for music and painting she loved all things flowers and could often be found tending to her yard that had beautiful giant elephant ear plants to beautiful red, pink and white roses. She loved writing about her day by day life and what her kids and grandchildren were doing in life. she would talk to God and pray for her family in the quietness of the day and also in the many hundreds of pages that she wrote in her lifetime. She had a love of the woods where she grew up as did her Father and her husband and could be found walking the trails that she and her husband blazed through their woods over 50 years. she delivered Meals for the Meals on Wheels program to people in Calhoun County for over 10 years and truly enjoyed meeting and helping the people of Calhoun County. Hazel did not simply pass away. She held the cure to death in her soul, an active relationship with her Lord Jesus Christ whom she accepted into her heart at an early age and was Baptized in a creek not far from where the Gaston Springs Church once stood. She worshiped with her church family at Pittsboro Baptist Church. Although she has departed from our presence, she has gone to rest in a place free sickness and the pains of age.
She leaves behind a loving family to continue walking down the path of life in her absence; one daughter; Linda Russell Johnson of Chattanooga TN; two sons: Billy Gerald (Dawn) Russell of Hattiesburg MS; Michael Glen (Teresa) Russell of Pittsboro MS; a son in law, Jimmy Bumguart of Pittsboro MS; seven grandchildren: Christopher (Susan) Johnson, Hassie (Will) Weldon, Jacob Russell, Tyler Russell, Dalton Russell, Caitlin (Luke) Buckner and Dustin Russell; one step grandson, John Bumguart. Seven great-grandchildren: Logan McAlester, Analeese Peacock, Brody Peacock, Ocean Buckner, Everest Buckner, David Johnson and Oran Johnson; her German Shepherd Maggie, a special friend Ms. Lurlene Holder, sister-in-law, Peggy Baker and a host of nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Glen Dorsey Capwell and Alice Vena Capwell; her husband William Bryant (Bill) Russell; her beloved Daughter Sharon Alice Russell Bumguart; three sisters, Nadine Smith, Patricia Cannon and Yvonne Tutor.
