Listen to Obituary

Perry Ray McCormick, 55, of Sarepta, went home 'a shoutin, surrounded by his dear friends and family, on Wednesday, August 9, 2022. Perry was born February 13, 1967, to J. D. (Peanut) and Virginia Ray McCormick.

Perry courageously fought cancer for the past three years, in order to spend more time with family and friends. Perry was a Christian, and the family takes comfort knowing a beautiful reunion will happen one day. He also loved his community and served as a dedicated firefighter and assistant chief for Northeast Calhoun Fire (Chickenbone) Department for 20 years. No one knows the number of hours of training, EMR, fire and accident calls responded to, Boston butts and chickens smoked, and catered events...but it was a lot. Perry was named the 2021 Calhoun County First Responder by the Bruce Chamber of Commerce.

He graduated from Bruce High School in 1985, and later graduated from Northwest Junior College, with a degree in machine shop and welding. He was a devoted metal-trades instructor for the Oxford-Lafayette School of Applied Technology. He loved his students, and nothing made him happier than seeing them succeed. It was evident that the love was mutual, as many students returned over the years to visit with their teacher.

Perry wore many hats, but his favorite was Pop to his grandchildren. He loved working on the family farm, going out to eat with his wife Leah. He looked forward to the first fall day each year, delighted when he could say, "It's almost flannel shirt weather." He and Leah shared a love of the mountains, hiking on the Appalachian Trail, and taking care of the numerous, orphaned animals that inevitably made their way to the McCormick home. Perry always said the dogs or cats could not stay, but they always stayed and then seemed to love him the most.

Perry leaves behind his wife of 15 years Leah McCormick; their son Austin Miller (Eryn) of Ocean Springs; their daughter Rivers Darby (Brady) of Bruce and two beloved grandchildren Walker Lane and Oakley Reid Darby, of Bruce. He also leaves behind his parents Jesse David and Virginia Ray McCormick of Sarepta; a brother Michael McCormick (Tunya); niece Caitlin, of Bruce; and brother-in-law James Boyle, of Vardaman.

He was preceded in death by wife Amy Joyce Boyle McCormick; grandparents Ira and Euris McCormick and Ray and Mary Ellen Powell.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 12, 2022, from 5:00 PM -8:00 PM at Parker Memorial Funeral Home in Bruce. The funeral service celebrating is life will take place on Saturday, August 13, 2022, at 2:00 PM, with Bro. Darrell Logan officiating with burial to follow in Bruce Cemetery.
