Tommie Gwin Sledge, 102, of Calhoun City passed from this life on July 8, 2021 at his home in Calhoun City. He was born on May 29, 1919, a mere six months after the end of World War I, to his late parents Thomas Lester Sledge and Cooper Lee Ingram Sledge.
Tommie was called to action by the United States government to protect his fellow Americans from the Axis powers of World War II. When his time in the United States Army had ended he was honorably discharged as Private First Class Sledge. After the war, Tommie caught the eye of the young Mary Alice Terry and later took her hand in marriage. The couples' union lasted an for over 70 years before her passing in March of 2019. He was the owner of a Service Beverage Company. As a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Tommie knew the Lord and held the cure to death in his soul.
He leaves behind a loving family to continue walking down the path of life;One daughter Carolyn (Charles) Smith of Collierville, Tennessee; One son Terry (Zhanna) Sledge of Birmingham, Alabama; Six Grandchildren: Chris Smith, Jennifer Smith , Jonathan Sledge, Tommy Sledge, Valerie Waskey, and Lana Downey; eight great grandchildren.
Tommie was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Terry Sledge; parents, Thomas Lester Sledge and Cooper Lee Ingram Sledge; one infant son, Robert Lester Sledge; Three Brothers: Homer Sledge, Howard Sledge, and Earl Sledge; Four Sisters: Mattie Sue Neal, Lena Mae Hannah, Pattie Sledge, and Mary Sprayberry.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 11, 2021 from 1:30 PM until the service beings.The funeral service for Mr. Sledge will take place on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Parker Memorial Funeral Home with Bro. Tommy Murphy officiating. Burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Garden where he will be laid to rest by his beloved wife Mary Alice.
