Velma Jean Murphree Hocutt, 84, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Grenada Health and Rehab in Grenada, MS. Jean was a longtime resident of Grenada, Mississippi.
Jean devoted more than 50 years of her life to nursing and caring for others, a profession she truly loved. She faithfully served for 41 years at the Grenada Rehabilitation Center, which was also her residence at the time of her passing.
Jean had a passion for reading and greatly enjoyed visiting her local library. She loved her family deeply and was greatly loved in return. Her wit and humor often kept us all laughing and will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Lawayne Bray; She was also preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, George Monroe "Buddy" Hocutt; her mother, Alma Louise Lambert Murphree; her father, George Thomas "Jack" Murphree; her brother, Dennis Ray Murphree (June); and her sister, Judy Ruth Murphree.
She is survived by her brother, Steve Murphree (Diane); Nieces, Karen Swanson (Michael), Casey Burrahm (Josh), and Stacy Murphree; and her great-nieces and nephews, Katelyn Swanson, Caroline Burrahm, and Jack Thomas Burrahm.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 3:00 p.m in the Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Jean's brother, Bro. Steve Murphree officiating. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service at Parker Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Jack Burrahm, Josh Burrahm, James Ray Lambert, Larry Logan, Derek Nalls, and Michael Swanson will be serving as pallbearers.
The Staff of Parker Memorial Funeral Home is honored to serve the Hocutt family as they begin this new season of life. We ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers as they mourn the loss of their loved one.
